The PhonLab at the Centre for General Linguistics (ZAS) offers very good employment and training opportunities for research and education in the fields of phonetics and phonology.

We have close cooperative relationships with Humboldt-University, Prof. Ch. Mooshammer, the Institut of Phonetics at LMU Munich, our French partner in Grenoble (GIPSA lab), the LPL Aix-en-Provence and the University of Jena, the TU Dresden and with the EVA-MPI Leipzig.

The PhonLab was originally established with help of the Max Planck Association in 1994 and it was reconceived and rebuilt under the direction of Prof. Pompino-Marschall and Jörg Dreyer in its current home at Schützenstr.18. Our Lab supports all colleagues and students at the ZAS in their scientific research and fieldwork. We also have the resources to help outside researchers, if they have questions or problems about technical experiments. Please contact Jörg Dreyer.

The lab consists of an anechoic chamber and technical room as well as a computer room with 3 work places for students. The anechoic chamber also serves as an electromagnetic shielded studio with high acoustic quality for recording of speech.

Areas of research in experimental phonetics conducted at the PhonLab include:

  • acoustical analyses of speech
  • electromagnetic articulography
  • electromagnetic palatography
  • laryngography
  • intraoral pressure and airflow
  • respiratory  measurements

The lab contains several computers, including one which controls the 12-channel-EMA-system AG500 from Carstens Medicine Electronics used to measure movements of tongue, lips and jaw, and another PC which works with the laryngograph used to capture data from the vibration of vocal folds in the larynx. The laryngograph is mainly used in student training. We can also use the system to measure intonation and vocal folds movements.

By measuring respiration at the thorax and the abdomen, we can use two inductotrace systems for one test person as well as with two speakers in a dialog. In the lab we have another computer to run our electropalatographic system  EPG 3.0, used to record tongue-palate-contacts (artificial palate with 62 electrodes).

For intraoral measurement of air pressure we have developed a special electrical system. It is based on a small (13mm x 1,5mm) pressure transducer from Endevco. The pressure sensors for the experiments are glued on the hard palate or are glued with a short piece of plastic tube on an artificial palate. This can be used in combination with EPG or EMA.

We have been working with a new inductotrace system, which allows us to measure the respiratory kinematics (inhalation, exhalation). This can be used in combination with recording of intraoral pressure while speaking. Therefore it is possible, to measure analog signals at 6 channels simultaneously.

In 2015 we are planning to build up a new motion capture lab. 

We have long experience in using Praat (Boersma,Weenink) for analysing acoustical signals on PC and MacIntosh.

For many other applications we are using software MATLAB/SIMULINK.

For recording, processing, analysing, and reproduction of acoustical signals in particular, we have a complete set of digital and analogue sound studio equipment including portable flash-recorders, DAT-recorders, digital soundcards, tapedecks, analogue bandmachines for older recordings, filter/equalizer, amplifier, loudspeaker, record- and CD-player, electronic measurement techniques, signal generator, oscilloscope as well as the corresponding high-grade microphone technology  for use in the lab or in fieldwork.

We also provide video camera and recorder equipment, used for instance in long term investigation of language acquisition.
